Ductless air conditioning
Ductless air conditioning has been used in Japan for many years. It is just now catching on in western countries. This type of air conditioning combines the best of central air conditioning systems and room air conditioning systems. It is a good choice for older buildings that will not accommodate duct work. The only breach in an outside wall is a hole of 7 or 8 centimeters in diameter for a conduit that holds electrical cable, suction tubing, refrigerant tubing and drain line.
The outdoor unit of a ductless air conditioning system contains the compressor and condenser, which are rather noisy, and the indoor unit holds the fan and evaporator unit. One immediate advantage of this setup is that there is not warming of cool air as you would have with cool air flowing through ducts. It is also easier to tailor the amount of cooling to the preferences of those in different rooms. These systems are easy to install, too.
The biggest disadvantage of a ductless air conditioning system is price. The can cost 30% over the cost of a central air conditioning unit and almost twice as much as a series of window units. Another disadvantage is that improper location of the air handling unit can compromise the system's efficiency. In North America, another disadvantage is that finding a properly trained service technician can be difficult since the systems are a new phenomenon.
