Heating Service
If your Heating system stops working properly, there are several things you can do to try to figure out what the problem is. Many of these problems will have to be fixed by a professional, but diagnosing the problem beforehand can result in a shorter service call. Always cut off all power before trying to troubleshoot your heatingsystem.
If the condensing fan motor (outdoors) stops, you could need a new capacitor or a new motor. If the fan blade is hard to turn then it's probably a new motor you need.
If the compressor will not start, and all you can hear is the outdoor condenser fan, the compressor is locked. Sometimes compressors are reluctant to start after sitting unused over the winter. Sometimes compressors can be re-started, but sometimes a new compressor is necessary.
If the outdoor condensing unit won't shut off unless you turn off the breaker, perhaps dirt or insects have worked their way in between the contact points when the contactor is off, causing it not to be able to shut off. Ice can form on the indoor evaporator coil, and air can not flow through the duct work. It is a good idea to get a can of compressed air and blow out the contactor at the beginning of the cooling season to prevent this problem.
