Industrial air conditioning systems run the gamut from systems that are little different from residential installations to the most sophisticated systems with narrow temperature requirements in "server farms" filled with computer servers, or hospitals where temperatures are critical. Industrial air conditioning systems will differ based on needs and wants.
The owner of a small boutique in a converted house may do fine with a high quality residential system. A new hospital, however, will have multiple requirements, and those requirements will differ from wing to wing and from floor to floor. A server farm full of computer servers must be kept within a narrow range of temperatures to keep machinery functioning possible: the livelihoods of thousands of people could be at stake if the industrial air conditioning system fails without adequate backup.
For such critical industrial air conditioning systems, the planning needs to go hand-in-hand with the design of the building, the design of particularly critical rooms, and the design of other systems, such as plumbing and electrical. In other cases, however, "off the shelf" industrial air conditioning systems are perfectly adequate and relatively quick to install. In older buildings it may be advisable to add general weatherproofing in the form of new windows, caulking of drafts, and the addition of insulation.
